Mumbai's Toxic Holi 2012 !!!

Yesterday morning I saw nearly 100s of kids and adults were playing with colours in our apartment common areas. Some of them came to our flat too ..but we strictly avoided as my son has running nose and bad dry cough ...Even I saw some toddlers and infants too .we talked about the artificial colour agents and really no one is ready to bother about that ...Today morning I saw the shocking news in TV...

The vibrant colours of Holi turned dull for about 200 children from Mumbai who suffered colour poisoning this Thursday while celebrating the festival of colours. The children, ranging in age from eight to ten year olds, were admitted to hospital after they started showing allergic reactions to the synthetic colours used by them. The hospital authorities stated that they have been given medications and all were in stable condition.A duty medical officer from Lokmanya Tilak general hospital at Sion said, “So far 176 children have been admitted to the hospital with complaints of skin allergy, burning of eyes, giddiness and vomiting. More and more cases are coming in since the afternoon. They seem to have played with colours with some chemical elements.”Besides the children, there were also complaints from some adults who were admitted following similar allergic reactions.

Most of the patients who suffered allergic reactions to the colours used in the Holi celebration hailed from south-central Mumbai. Though some of the cases were critical when admitted, all responded well to treatment and stabilised, hospital officials stated. The concentration of the affected from that area alerted the police, who are now looking into the matter and trying to trace the source of the poisonous colours.“The children, mostly in age group of 9-10 years, were rushed in to the municipal hospital and slowly more and more cases started pouring in,” a source at the hospital said blood samples of the affected children were collected and medication was administered.

The colours used in holi are essentially chemicals and can have serious side effects . For example, red is mercury sulphite, green is copper sulphate, purple is made from chromium and bromide compounds and black has lead oxide. Their usage can lead to skin irritation, allergies, hair loss, edema and erythema and even blindness. You can choose to play with natural colors or with plain water. There are a lot of ways to create natural colors – you can use turmeric, beetroot and mehandi (henna) for common colors. You can be creative and make even more colors from household stuff. Ensure that you speak to the parents of his/her potential playmates so that they also play holi without these chemicals. However, it is always better to prepare your children in case others are playing with these colors. A generous helping of cold cream on the body, and oil on the hair and scalp should help. Clearly instruct your child to close his/her eyes if someone applies colour on her head or face, or throws colored water towards him/her.

With these precautions, you can be sure your child is going to have a fun-filled holi with memories to last a lifetime. Please think twice before buying any product which is very attractive in colour.....I am going to write in detail about this artificial substances and preservatives in my next post .

Flashback ...I love 90s

Today morning I got up around 4 am....Suddenly I heard a 10000 wala cracker sound while sleeping ...I was little tensed because I thought it's already 6 am..Then checked the time and thanks to the boy/girl/ man who did this alarm job for me....Then I did Pooja and almost lightened 10 lamps...The great news is kavin too got up around 4 am...Then I gave him Ganga sthanam..We both did Pooja..He was watching neighbours rangoli more than an hour..

Then I entered my office ..You are correct ..The great kitchen..I cooked so much..Sweet pongal, pongal, vada, chuntey, sambar etc.....We all had a good breakfast...I started calling all friends and relatives...Special wishes for my brother ..He is celebrating his Thala diwali (first Diwali after marriage).... I don't feel so much happy like my childhood...

When I was 9 or 10 ,I can tell like I almost wait for this Diwali every year..Me and my brother make big list for Diwali...We used to go and enquire new arrival of crackers before Diwali only...All our cousins come to our place every year..We all have a big fight for bathing...After bathing only, our grandma allows us to burst crackers...Hmm...I always keeps crackers in hands and fire them..We all felt that is heroism in our childhood...

After this ,we love to have Diwali special idli, vadas, sweets etc...My mother almost runs a restaurant on Diwali day...She cooks almost 200 to 300 idles...Our house maid, people who all are working with my father, farm workers all come and have food in my house....Then we continue to watch Diwali special programs, indiya tholai katchil mudhal muryaga films(first time in Indian television films),again sleep for some time ...

In evening, all kids in and around fight for silly things who burst more crackers, who has more papers in front of house?....Finally all flower pots, sky shots, rackets come to our mind and continue our bursting job...Still I can remember the incident ..I fired one rocket and it went in horizontal way inside of vertical and fall on the hut...We all ran inside the house...My poor cousin got nice scoldings ....

On Diwali night,we end up with firing all burst cracker papers and sit near the fire for an hour and plays anthaksari...Then the diwali ends....
Miss that all wonderful days.......

Happy Diwali.......

I accept all the sms/emails/face to face Diwali greetings, how about EXPERIENCING DIWALI this year?

As we clean our homes, let’s clean our minds and intellects too.

As we wear new clothes, let’s also get rid off our old, unwanted, disturbing habits of anger, jealousy, worry…. and emerge our new but original qualities of peace, love, bliss and happiness.

Tonight we will settle our old account books and begin new ones, simultaneously let us settle our old karmic accounts, any unpleasant relationships and begin our relationships in a new, positive way.

We are all aware of the pollution caused by firecrackers, but it is Diwali, we need to burn crackers, so why not burn all the crackers of evil characteristics within ourselves – this burning will in fact purify our minds and the environment.

As we exchange sweets let us also exchange meaningful sweet words, good wishes and blessings.

If we really experience Diwali we will succeed in invoking (calling upon) Goddess Lakshmi. Her name comes from the word, ‘Laksh’ meaning ‘the GOAL’, experiencing Diwali (as explained above) will help us reach our ultimate goal of heavenly perfection – which Goddess Lakshmi stands for.

Worshipping Goddess Lakshmi is good, but what is even better is making the wealth of spiritual knowledge and qualities (which Goddess Lakshmi has to offer) a part of our life. A divine character alone can attain prosperity and peace.

Wish u all a very happy and safe Diwali.......

Ganapathi Pooja so far so good...

I had a different experience in Mumbai today even though everyday I am having different experience..Yes today is Ganesh Pooja...We decided to buy some Pooja items..First we started searching for plantain leaves..I was totally surprised ..shocked...The leaf is almost 6 ft height....It is almost taller than me....I remembered one senthil movie and started laughing....Next betle leaves, supari, flowers, towel for Ganesha ,fruits etc....atlast where is Ganesha?

We went couple of shops and they showed almost 4 ft Ganesha ..I told its not for apartment ...It's for my home...Then he told all are sold out...what???...Ganesha is also sold out....We started eating auto driver's head...We told him that we are ready to pay u extra..Pls take us to some shops as we came very new to this place...Before we start from home I argued with my husband like I need clay Ganesha as I am interested in go green concept..But now whatever POP,Plastic, with /without paint......I am ready to get it..

Finally he showed one place ...I can't even believe....200 Ganeshas...concept Ganeshas like world cup Ganesha, balganesha, tricycle Ganesh (My son wants to buy that only..May be he thought he can use the cycle)..then I saw a small Ganesha idol is lying all alone with group of all big Ganesha...I picked that Ganesha...hooray...I got cute small Ganesha.....

Today morning I arranged all Pooja items ...I kept Ganesh idol in a small stool and started decorating with all grass, towel etc.My son is so happy to see the Ganesha ..and touching his nose (May be he also wants long nose like Ganesha )...He started doing naughty things like running with bananas, coconuts and fruits...I cleaned almost 4 to 5 times. The worst part is my maid is in leave for more than 5 days..So after pooja I totally exhausted ....

But overall it is a great day.May Ganesha shower us all with his blessings....
"Ganpati Bappa Moriya Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar yaa"

PS: I started learning Marathi ...But I hate Ganapathi Immersion....
PS:That auto driver didn't take extra money even though we forced....hats off to him...
